Standards and compliance

The inspection body in Wales is Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Education and Training in Wales (known as Estyn).  The powers and duties of Estyn are contained in Chapter 3 of Part 1 of, and Schedules 2 to 4 to, the Education Act 2005.  This body inspects a wide range of education institutions including:

  • community schools
  • community special schools
  • voluntary controlled schools
  • voluntary aided schools
  • foundation schools
  • foundation special schools
  • maintained nursery schools
  • pupil referral units
  • independent schools
  • teacher training
  • careers advice provision
